Since 1989 Professor Meir Oren is the CEO and Medical Director of the Hillel-Yaffe Medical Center. Prof. Oren graduated from the Sackler School of Medicine in 1978, received a Masters in Pediatrics also from the Sackler School of Medicine in 1983 and an MPH from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1985. Prof. Oren is Board certified in both pediatrics and medical administration and is actively engaged in a wide range of activities concerning policy and health care services at the national level in Israel. He is a senior lecturer at the Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine at the Technion. From 1995-1996, Prof. Oren served as the Director-General of the Ministry of Health and since 1996 Oren has been the Chairman of the National Advisory Committee of Hospital Preparedness for Biological Exceptional Scenario in Israel. He is also a member of many joint committees dealing with emergency preparedness at the national level: the Epidemic Management Team, the Steering Committee for Early Identification and Surveillance of Contagious Diseases to name two. Oren wrote the chapter on “Biological Agents and Terror Medicine” in a recently published book entitled Essentials of Terror Medicine (2008). Prof. Oren’s main interests are in the broader aspects of preparedness for non-conventional terrorism – chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear attacks and warfare scenarios – at the national level in general and its impact on and the response of the health care system in particular.
