Government Social Expenditure – 2006

a7 Oct 2006

The rate of government expenditure on social services has continued to decline for the fourth year in a row. Even before the latest conflict, the defense budget reached the level that it was at the height of the last wave of terror in 2002, while the health and education budgets have been suffering continual erosion.
These are just some of the findings in the chapter analyzing the State budget in the Taub Center annual publication on social expenditure. The chapter was written by Mr. Yaacov Lifshitz, former Director-General of the Ministry of Finance and Taub Center Economics expert.
The study also found that despite signs of economic recovery in the past few years, the economic gaps in Israeli society are continuing to widen and there is continued deterioration in the situation of the members of the weakest socio-economic groups. Despite the campaign promises of strengthening the social fabric, the 2007 budget does little to herald improvement.
